The Registered Nurse in Radiation Oncology is a member of an interdisciplinary care team. This role provides patient centric care and is primarily responsible for nursing assessment and diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to provide conscious sedation to brachytherapy patients under the supervision of the attending physician.
  • Ability to assist in HDR Procedures (including equipment preparation.)
  • Demonstrates a high level understanding of oncology illnesses and treatment using radiation therapy.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assess physical, pain, emotional and social needs and to evaluate the overall adaptation to illness patients at the initial point of contact and on an ongoing basis.
  • Demonstrates an ability to conduct patient triage via the telephone. Documents all interactions in a timely manner.
  • Strong ability to develop a plan of care to respond to patient symptoms and reactions resulting from the disease or the radiation therapy and other forms of treatment.
  • Able to develop a plan of care for patients receiving radiation therapy including but not limited to monitoring of relevant lab values, maintaining documentation of the overall plan and the treatments provided, and assuring adequate arrangements for the patients to receive the treatment.
  • Provides ongoing patient and family education regarding radiation therapy.
  • Coordinates the plan of care with other nurses and members of the team.
  • Uses effective problem solving skills in complex situations.
  • Uses effective communication skills (both verbal and written) including the ability to communicate to patients in a state of crisis.
  • Demonstrated capability to manage accurate, fast completion of highly detailed tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible working in a fast paced environment in close proximity to other staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and to deal effectively with unpredictable situations.

Qualifications

Training, Education and Experience (Required)

  • Current Washington State license
  • ACLS certification

 

Education and Experience (Preferred)

  • Previous experience in a Radiation Oncology Clinic.
  • 2+ years’ experience in Oncology Nursing.
  • Encourage certification in Oncology Nursing.
  • Broad knowledge of Oncology, disease process, therapy and symptom management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and phone triage skills.
  • Ability to lift 45 lbs.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required To Perform the Job Duties

  • Currently certified in conscious sedation through UWMC or will obtain certification within 4 weeks of hire.
  • IV line access ability.
