The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance is dedicated to helping patients before, during and after treatment. The organization’s goal is simple, to turn cancer patients into cancer survivors. The nonprofit is made up of a union of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medicine and Seattle Children’s, forming a world-class treatment organization that provides advanced therapies and clinical trials. SCCA prides itself on its patient care role in translating scientific discovery into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure of cancer.


SCCA is ranked as one of the top five cancer hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Our care combines powerful science with devoted collaboration, where boundary-pushing discovery and innovation happen in one location. As a member of the Alliance of Dedicated Cancer Centers (ADCC), SCCA is one of only 11 centers in the country solely focused on deepening the understanding of the causes and cures for cancer; developing new treatments for cancer; and disseminating this knowledge to the provider community at large. SCCA is also a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and is the only National Cancer Institute–designated comprehensive cancer center in the Pacific Northwest.


The Director of Performance Excellence will improve the patient experience by developing a culture of continuous performance improvement, and a constant focus on improving outcomes.  The Director will connect, collaborate, innovate, and mature all of our change and improvement efforts into an effective and cohesive approach in support of our transformative vision and strategy.


This role will develop an integrated practice of internal consultants, program/project managers and others who will guide a portfolio of strategic initiatives, as well as further develop our collective skills, knowledge and tools.


SCCA is seeking an experienced leader who will guide our Lean transformation through education, innovation, collaboration, and respect for all employees.


The Director will work across the organization, focusing on value as defined by our patients, to establish and document standard work, deploy lean management systems, and create an engine for continuous performance improvement. The work will be firmly rooted in the vision and principles of Lean and the pragmatism of project management.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Improve the patient experience. 
  • Improve staff work experience.
  • Work with leaders to facilitate continuous improvement and robust project/change leadership throughout the organization.
  • Lead enterprise-wide efforts to identify, define, prioritize and deliver projects that are aligned with the SCCA strategic goals and approved by leadership.
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight to improvement and change efforts, including CPI and PMO initiatives.
  • Harmonize and continue developing appropriate tools and methodologies for a variety of strategic projects/initiatives.
  • Develop and report Performance Excellence progress and metrics. Monitor, report and assure transparency of performance throughout organization.


General Responsibilities:

  • Lead our transformation focused on improving the patient’s experience and the value of our care as defined by our patients and their families.
  • Employ Lean principles and resources to drive rapid and effective transformation.
  • Put in place required operational and informational management decision support systems to establish and maintain a culture of execution and continuous improvement.
  • Establish departmental and individual goals and objectives in alignment with overarching goals and priorities. Identify performance improvement targets and metrics. Ensure capabilities and capacity in place to effectively deliver on all departmental commitments and performance targets.
  • Deliver portfolio of projects to Strategic Implementation Committee on time, on scope and on budget with a high degree of stakeholder and project team satisfaction, based on meeting business objectives and delivery of a high quality solution.
  • Strengthen overall leadership and organizational capabilities in area of responsibility. Build and sustain high performance teams and ensure strong alignment and coordination with other functional groups across the organization.
  • Deliver thoughtful direction on the project intake process and facilitate the integration of project management with continuous performance improvement work with continued focus on quality for superior performance.
  • Partner effectively with Operations and Quality counterparts to ensure that performance improvement effort support the safe care of and exceptional outcomes for patients.
  • Identify the required resources and expertise, implement the appropriate team/departmental structures and establish the required processes and communications to enable department(s) to effectively deliver on all commitments.
  • Manage headcount and expenses in area of responsibility to meet approved spending plan while achieving all departmental commitments and project objectives.
  • Motivate, retain and develop key employees. Build and sustain employee engagement by creating a culture of execution and an environment within which individuals and teams can excel and continuously improve.
  • Develop a training environment and education program for employees org-wide focused on innovation and breakthrough improvements.
  • Facilitate cross functional and cross alliance partnerships.
  • Promote best practices throughout the organization and work with operational teams to develop and refine our leadership approach to Daily Management Systems.

  • Working knowledge of Lean as modeled by Toyota.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or a related field of study
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive management experience with minimum 5 years’ experience managing process improvement and program/change management activities.
  • Demonstrated performance as a leader and change agent with a strong record of accomplishment in leading major strategic projects.
  • Experience developing strategy and delivering results on large, complex transformation initiatives that identify, design, and implement creative business and technology solutions throughout value streams to meet business objectives.
  • Must possess the ability to facilitate working groups and training sessions with strong presentation and training skills along with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong personal leadership skills. 
  • Ability to quickly establish trust and rapport within process excellence groups, operating and project teams across departments and communicate across a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability and experience reporting and communicating to Sr. Executives.


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Business or related field.
  • At least 8 years in a senior management role.
  • Toyota Production System Education and PMI certifications are a plus.
  • Experience within a large complex academic medical center or oncology ambulatory care environment.
