Overview

The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), located in Seattle, Washington, is part of a dynamic collaboration among three organizations known nationally and internationally for their patient care and research: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Seattle Children's. Over the past 25 years, these institutions have worked together to support their mission of adult and pediatric oncology patient care services, research and education.

 

SCCA Pathology department provides comprehensive diagnostic pathology services for the hematology/oncology, immunotherapy, and bone marrow transplant populations of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). The selected candidate will:

  • Perform all duties in the laboratory including routine histology, immunohistochemistry, accessioning, and laboratory maintenance.
  • Work under the guidance of and in conjunction with the Laboratory Directors and Manager, in accomplishing the goals of the laboratory.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job in order to carry out the primary responsibilities.

The Clinical Histotechnician III is responsible for producing high quality histology work for SCCA patients and clients. A Clinical Histotechnician III position requires close interaction with the Pathology Manager and Pathologists.

Responsibilities

  • Perform standard histology benchwork including embedding, cutting, special stains and immunohistochemistry with reliable accuracy and efficiency
  • Maintain lab areas and equipment
  • Perform and document assigned QC activities
  • Accession and gross specimens
  • Prepare cytospin
  • Inventory, prepare and maintain lab reagents and control slides
  • Participate in orientation and training of lab staff
  • Help with daily planning to handle workload according to available resources
  • Help with SOP revisions
  • Be able to answer straightforward questions regarding specimen requirements
  • May be assigned special projects
  • Contribute moderately to operations beyond routine testing (assist with quality management, or new test validations) under supervision.
  • Troubleshoot basic equipment or assays issues with minimal assistance
  • May represent the lab at SCCA meetings to address interdepartmental issues, especially technical issues
  • Write new procedures
  • Investigate problems with procedures and equipment
  • Participate in planning for future developments in the lab including changes in workload, staffing needs, workspace needs, equipment or available tests
  • Be able to answer complex questions regarding specimen requirements
  • Work directly with department pathologists on internal research projects
  • May help gather retrospective or prospective data for potential publication of papers, posters, and abstracts
  • Will be assigned special projects
  • Work with other members of lab management to improve operations, investigate and implement new technologies, streamline workflow strategies, organize and evaluate QM records
  • Be able to instruct clinicians and staff in histology techniques
  • Determine case priority, and assign work
  • Assist with implementation of process improvement

Qualifications

Required:

 

  • Associate Degree in related scientific field
  • HT(ASCP) Certification
  • Highly experienced level position typically with at least 6 years' experience in a Histology lab and least one additional certification in a related scientific field 
  • Basic knowledge of CAP guidelines
  • Sound Judgment
  • Work under direction of supervisory staff
  • Good Attention to Detail
  • Basic Troubleshooting Skills
  • Solid Computer Skills
  • Solid Communication Skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent computer skills with experience in Excel and Word.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills

SCCA has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy, and there are no exceptions for any employee who is patient-facing and/or requires access to SCCA facilities.
