The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), located in Seattle, Washington, is part of a dynamic collaboration among three organizations known nationally and internationally for their patient care and research: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Seattle Children's. Over the past 25 years, these institutions have worked together to support their mission of adult and pediatric oncology patient care services, research and education.

Under general supervision, this position identifies all analytic and nonanalytic cancer cases according to American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) standards. They assign International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O) codes, collaborative staging and AJCC TNM stages using the American Joint Committee on Cancer, Manual for Staging of Cancer, and Seventh Edition to all reportable cancer cases. They will serve as an information resource for ICD-O coding, staging and abstracting to assure quality data and correct end results and assist in patient follow-ups.


  • With thorough understanding of cancer disease process and medical terminology, abstracts all cancer cases according to Commission on Cancer standards and the needs of the SCCA medical staffs in a timely manner
  • Assigns ICD-O site and morphology codes
  • Demonstrates ability to interpret pathology reports and other pertinent information in medical records to assign TNM staging and histology grade for all cancer patients
  • Responsible for case finding; identify analytic cases vs. non-analytic cases according to rules and regulations of Commission on Cancer to ensure complete Cancer Registry for SCCA
  • Coordinates quality control activities
  • Participates in Rapid Quality Reporting System (RQRS)
  • Assist in the follow-up of cancer patients
  • Manages any discrepancies between Cancer Surveillance system and SCCA data
  • Participates in the development of database program
  • Participates in Cancer Committee meetings
  • Participates in Cancer Conferences
  • Participates in patient care evaluation studies
  • Updates Cancer Registry policy and procedure manual
  • Acts as information resource to physicians, other departments, and other health care providers to eliminate duplicate efforts and to assure quality data
  • Perform related duties as required



  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)
  • Knowledge in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology
  • Working knowledge in Microsoft Office



  • Bachelor of Science
  • Has working knowledge of both Onoclog and CNExT Cancer Registry Database system
  • 2 years of work experience in Cancer Registry
