Overview

The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, located in Seattle, Washington, is part of a dynamic collaboration among three organizations known nationally and internationally for their patient care and research: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Seattle Children's. Over the past 25 years, these institutions have worked together to support their mission of adult and pediatric oncology patient care services, research and education.

 

Under direct supervision of supervisory staff, the Clinical Laboratory Technician II is responsible for accessioning and processing clinical and research specimens in the SCCA Pathology Laboratory, staining bone marrow aspirate smear slides, and answering phone inquiries.  Additional duties as assigned, could include filing blocks and slides, performing daily and weekly laboratory maintenance, and transcribing patient reports and documents. The successful candidate will work closely with histotechnicians, residents/fellows, and pathologists.

 

The work schedule for this position is 12:00 PM - 8:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, accession, and process various specimens according to protocol and in a timely manner
  • Prepare reagents, maintain laboratory equipment, record data, and file tissue blocks and slides.  Assume responsibility for reagent and supply inventories.  Order supplies in a timely manner. 
  • Complete in a timely manner all assigned maintenance duties.
  • Maintain laboratory records, compute data and enter onto computer data
  • Prepare, stain, and QC bone marrow aspirate slides for handout
  • Triage incoming phone calls from providers or other laboratories
  • Actively participate in laboratory meetings and huddles

Qualifications

 

  • High school or equivalent required, Some College course work emphasizing laboratory science preferred
  • One to two years of histology laboratory experience preferred
  • Experience with the MS Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to communicate verbally in person, on the phone, and in writing in a clear, concise and professional manner
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a high pressure, time-sensitive, and complex health care environment
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot issues appropriately
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job in order to carry out the primary responsibilities
