    The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), located in Seattle, Washington, is part of a dynamic collaboration among three organizations known nationally and internationally for their patient care and research: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Seattle Children's. Over the past 25 years, these institutions have worked together to support their mission of adult and pediatric oncology patient care services, research and education.

     

    The Social Worker I is responsible for providing professional social work services (i.e., screening, motivational interviewing, brief interventions, counseling, resource needs assessment, identification and navigation) to adult patients and families. This position collaborates with SCCA partner institutions as well as public and community based social services and behavioral health providers to ensure continuity of care across systems.

     

    The incumbent uses clinical judgment and problem solving skills to address patient and family emotional/psychological, social, developmental and tangible resource issues, and facilitates identification, referrals and linkage to internal and community resources. They will also assist and advocate for patients with concrete needs, and strive to achieve the highest in patient (customer) satisfaction. Supports the mission of SCCA and its affiliates, and provides consultation to staff at SCCA and to community resources as needed.

    Responsibilities

    • Distress screening, to evaluate emotional and psychological distress
    • Mental health screening and substance use disorder screening to identify psychological/psychiatric conditions that need to be addressed within the context of care planning. This includes screening for distress, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, substance use, and cognitive status
    • Emotional support (brief therapy, individual and family counseling, grief and loss counseling and crisis intervention)
    • Collaboration and consultation with medical teams regarding psychological, social and emotional issues, mental health conditions, substance related conditions, and considerations for care/treatment planning
    • Referral to internal services a the SCCA, local and regional support networks, and tangible needs resources
    • Conducts patient navigation activities
    • Coordination with in-patient social workers to facilitate transition between in-patient, out-patient and home
    • Promotion of needs for the culturally diverse and socially, intellectually or physically challenged patients
    • Assisting medical team to effectively address disruptive behavior and help with developing Patient Care Agreements when necessary

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • Master's degree in Social Work from an accredited graduate School of Social Work
    • WA State Department of Health registration/certification/licensure
    • Experience with counseling individuals and families
    • Strong assessment and crisis intervention skills
    • Ability to communicate effectively with patients/families from diverse cultural backgrounds
    • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams
    • Computer skills: Outlook, Word, Excel
    • Demonstrated ability to assess human services needs and link to resources
    • Familiarity with continuum of public and community-based service providers / systems
    • Familiarity with benign hematology/Sickle Cell disease preferred; experience in serving this population ideal

    Preferred:

    • Skills in screening for distress and mental health conditions, including substance use disorders
    • Experience working with oncology patients and family members/significant other and working effectively with multidisciplinary teams
    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy training
    • Brief interventions training
    • Motivational interviewing training
    • Grief and loss training
