Overview

Under the direction and supervision of the VP of Operations and Medical Director, the Clinical Nurse Manager is responsible for directing nursing and ancillary staff and assessing departmental needs.

 

The Clinical Nurse Manager functions as a first-line administrative and clinical supervisor of a complex work area coordinating and directing nursing activities of subordinate, licensed, professional, Registered Nurses and ancillary staff to assure the needs of radiation oncology patients are met. The role includes coordinating staff to assure that effective nursing services are provided to radiation oncology patients and quality standards are met.

 

The Clinical Nurse Manager coordinates and conducts educational programs and opportunities for staff, develops and conducts QA studies, and attends organizational meetings.

 

The Clinical Nurse Manager serves as the liaison between the nursing department and other departments, and builds and maintains collaborative relationships with outside organizations, promoting seamless coordination of care for patients between organizations.

 

The Clinical Nurse Manager prepares nursing staff for and assists in preparing for surveys by accrediting agencies and other necessary licensure inspections.

 

The Clinical Nurse Manager is responsible for maintaining good communication with physicians, ensuring efficient patient flow, and making system changes when necessary to ensure effectiveness and maximum use.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and maintaining written objectives, policies, procedural manuals, organizational plans and quality assurance programs for the nursing service. All nursing policies and procedures should be reviewed at least annually.
  • Ensures quality of care to patients and families representing “best in class”.
  • Develops and maintains standards of practice for the department, as evidenced in written standards and evaluation of compliance. Contributes to the professional development of staff, students, and colleagues in an environment of mutual respect and understanding.
  • Coordinates with clinical research assuring all regulations and Good Clinical Practice guidelines are followed.
  • Responsible for reporting to research coordinators any discovered protocol violations and/or breaches in human subject protection.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and retention of nursing staff.
  • Responsible for job descriptions, performance appraisals and professional development opportunities for staff.
  • Responsible for operating within approved budget.
  • Ensures availability and operation of necessary equipment and supplies for patient care.
  • Coordinates activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees.
  • Supervises and provides leadership to ancillary staff and assists team members with patient care as needed in accordance with their scope of practice and organizational standards. Evaluates and verifies employee performance through the review of completed work assignments and work techniques.
  • Maintains records, prepares reports, and composes correspondence relative to the work.
  • Supervises and participates in the provision of general nursing care services.
  • Assures staff evaluates and documents patient progress and toxicities, and helps manage those toxicities.
  • Serves as liaison between staff and other areas within the facility at large, and as an advisor to other disciplines.
  • Assesses needs for personnel, supplies, equipment, and physical facilities for budget planning.
  • Participates in clinical conferences, workshops, seminars, and related forums.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Will cover Clinical Nurse, Intake and Recovery Room Nurse as needed.
  • Participation in staff orientation and staff education services.
  • Ensures that the nursing staffing patterns are implemented.
  • Coordinates and integrates the nursing service with other patient care services to provide a continuum of care for the patient.
  • Ensures all RN electronic medical documentation is compliant with center policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use all channels of communication to address interdepartmental and intradepartmental concerns, solves problems, and addresses conflict.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

  • Works with VP of Operations to plan, understand and adhere to budget requirements for the nursing service.
  • Communicates budget thresholds to nursing staff, and works to ensure nursing staff remain within budget on both operational and capital expenditures.
  • Monitors budget performance during the fiscal year, recommends adjustments to spending and corrects discrepancies.
  • Prepares visual reports as a management tool for leadership on a monthly basis

Qualifications

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 7+ years RN experience required, with 3-5 years oncology experience preferred
  • 5+ years supervisory experience

 

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of nursing processes used in the practice of radiation oncology nursing.
  • Knowledge of training and supervisory technique
  • Ability to instruct, direct, and evaluate employees.
  • Ability to maintain records, prepares reports, and composes correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, co-workers, subordinates, superiors, partner hospitals/medical practices, the general public, representatives of public and private organizations and others sufficient to exchange or convey information.
  • Basic knowledge of principles in the conduct of Clinical Research and Human Research Subject Protection

EDUCATION/DEGREE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
  • RN licensure
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Certification as Clinical Research Professional preferred
  • OCN preferred
  • Certified in Infection Control (CIC) by the National Board of Infection Control or completed an APIC Basic Training Course or has received at least 25 hours of training in infection control, and receives an additional six hours of training annually. (preferred)
