Overview

The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, located in Seattle, Washington, is part of a dynamic collaboration among three organizations known nationally and internationally for their patient care and research: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Seattle Children's. Over the past 25 years, these institutions have worked together to support their mission of adult and pediatric oncology patient care services, research and education.

 

 

Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Senior Manager, Communications will set and guide the strategy for all internal and external public relations messages. This position will work closely with a senior peer group within the organization as a communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives including crisis communications planning, internal communication messaging and rollout of key initiatives. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of public relations to increase SCCA’s reputation nationally, regionally and locally. This includes strategic development and execution of communications plans and building relationships with the key stakeholders. 

Responsibilities

Communications Strategy, Vision and Leadership

  • Develop and implement an integrated, organization­-wide strategic communications plan to broaden awareness of SCCA and strengthen the brand identity across key stakeholder audiences
  • Create a public relations strategy that will allow SCCA executive leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high­-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the sector and organization. Work to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed
  • Coordinate and organize annual meetings that engage the internal staff
  • Serve as lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization and actively cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance, as well as programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects
  • Provide strategic guidance and direction through the development and implementation of Crisis Communications planning
  • Provide support and guidance to internal constituents through media training and development
  • Create and execute Annual Report for organization.
  • Develop and support internal communications/publications such as newsletters, releases, email announcements, etc.
  • Coordinate and organize bi-annual staff meetings
  • Manage relationships with any communications ­related vendors or consultants and maximize media opportunities.

Team Development/Management

  • Manage a communications support team, to support the development and execution of the communications strategy
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 10+ years’ experience in a communications role
  • Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
  • Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to "manage by influence"
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Capable leader, manager and coach with strong entrepreneurial work ethic and a desire to “get the job done”
  • Ability to prioritize and follow through effectively
