The Medical Imaging RN provides quality nursing care for patients in the imaging setting. The nurse is knowledgeable in meeting the physical, psychological, cultural, and educational needs of patients.

Reports to Nursing Supervisor, Medical Imaging


Provides patient care in Medical Imaging:

  1. Demonstrates knowledge of patient preparation for various Imaging scans, including MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine, and PET scans.
  2. Draws blood for laboratory tests according to SCCA policy and procedure. Demonstrates knowledge of proper labeling of specimens and management of research specimens.
  3. Provides patient and family teaching regarding imaging exams, as appropriate.
  4. Monitors patients for adverse reaction to contrast or other medications. Demonstrates knowledge of management of patients according to SCCA policy and procedure.
  5. Provide psychosocial support to patients and families, as needed.
  6. Assists in pre-procedure calls to patients to identify special needs or risks, provide needed information, and ensure patient understanding of preparation and follow-up.
  7. Collaborates with Charge RN, radiologists, radiological technologists, and other team members concerning administration of medications for anxiety, pain control, and symptom management. Monitors for drug interactions and side effects.
  8. Screens for use of subcutaneous or oral antihyperglycemic drugs (e.g., metformin and metformin derivatives, and others). Monitors patients as needed during Imaging appointment and collaborates with oncology team on the management of metformin-containing medication post-CT.
  9. Records variances of standard practice and/or policies & procedures in Patient Safety Net accurately where required.


Assures the patient safety:

  1. Ensures continuity of care through effective handoff communication to intra- and interdepartmental team members.
  2. Coordinates effective handling of patient care emergencies arising from contrast media reactions, seizures, respiratory and cardiac emergencies, and other unexpected events. 
  3. Collaborates with clinic staff to problem solve patient care issues and coordinate intradepartmental transfers of care.


Training, Education and Experience (Required)

  • Registered Nurse license in Washington State
  • 2 years experience in an acute-care or similar out-patient setting
  • Current CPR card
  • Recent experience in peripheral venous access

Education and Experience (Preferred)

  • ACLS Certification
  • Radiology Nursing experienc
  • Oncology nursing experience
