The Hutch Data Commonwealth (HDC) represents a new organization within the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center with a mission to develop new capabilities and resources to facilitate the center’s interaction with large and complex data sets and cutting-edge software tools and technologies. The HDC Software Development team works with the product management group and data scientists to build robust software tools and provide the research community with flexible, extensible, programmatic and interactive access to relevant datasets, analytical tools and visualization toolkits.


In this role, you will work with a small, collaborative team of engineers, product managers, and others – so excellent collaborative, interpersonal and communication skills are also necessary along with a love for coding and learning new technologies as the need arises.


  • Work alongside a friendly multi-functional team to design, create and support end-to-end software solutions across a range of technologies.
  • Work with product managers and other users to understand and translate business needs to technical requirements.
  • Create and maintain documentation
  • Provide Tier 2 Support of software
  • Collaborate with other members of IT staff and end users
  • Participate in code and design reviews
  • Create application architecture and design for small to mid-sized projects
  • Lead development of small to mid-size projects
  • Mentor other team members, as needed.
  • Analyze user requirements
  • Estimate software development tasks and participating in creating development and implementation schedules for features and applications
  • Maintain knowledge and follow department specific project management methodologies
  • Proven track record of delivering on multiple complex projects through all stages of the development lifecycle; design through deployment
  • Contribute, follow and maintain knowledge of current software development trends, best practices, industry tools and standards
  • May require to function as an on-call support


  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering or related field desired
  • 3-5 years professional software development experience in Java
  • Experience with ORM tools, preferably Hibernate
  • Spring and/or Spring Boot experience
  • Database design and development
  • Sharp analytical abilities, proven design skills and problem solving skills
  • UI Development experience using JavaScript frameworks is a plus
  • Build experience with Maven and familiarity with popular continuous integration systems
  • Solid understanding of Object Oriented Programming concepts, data structures and algorithms
  • Proven track record coaching and mentoring team members
  • Enjoys working in a team environment and has a proven record of positive contributions to the work of the team
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in an engineering environment in driving operational excellence and best practices
  • Demonstrated presentation skills
